Abstract:

This is an interactive application that helps students master the basic concepts of Organic Chemistry. In this prototype of the application, the IUPAC nomenclatures of Alkanes are explained.

Description:

The application consists of questions in different subtopics within the main topic (IUPAC nomenclature of Alkanes - in this case). The questions asked are of different categories e.g., multiple choice questions, construction of compounds, etc. Together they bring diversity and interest to study. The students can do a quick look up of the topics through the reference section. The response of the students is sent to the instructor at the end of each section. This is different from the existing applications / text by provides instantaneous feedback to the student at every step, to take the place of a personal tutor.

Educational Goals:

  • To act as a personal tutor, providing feedback and reference as and when required by the student.
  • Learning should be an active process and should be individualized.
  • Instructors should encourage independent enquiry and problem solving.
  • Students should be encouraged to make personal decisions on course content, study methods and outcomes within the boundaries of the curriculum.
  • To provide a self-learning environment where teachers are the facilitators and promoters of learning.
Use Scenario:

This application is intended for high school students studying basic organic chemistry. It would accompany the text and be used as a personal tutor by the students. To enable, instructors monitor the progress of their students, the application would be hosted on the web.
